Ok, bbs. I think we are going to jump off now. It was SO amazing to see what this platform can do or be for Office Hours. I think it is going to be a creative playground, I will come back by tomorrow to see if I missed anything. Thanks to Lydia. She is such a force and one of my creativity playmates in this wild life. I learn so much from her always. I hope she will come back on with me soon. Look for a night version of this soon. Follow Lydia on Instagram and Twitter. xoxo amy

What does it feel like when you are being creative? When you are in the zone?

Expand full comment

I think at heart I am a v introspective creative, but where I thrive with ideas is the stimulation in a group setting. Like having a community cheering each other on - for example this forum and workshops are so energizing. In this remote isolated world it's so meaningful to hear/see others words and share your own with an empathy practice of - I see you, I hear you, I love your heart, etc.

yes, i love this too. I love the energy of community too. I am very much looking forward to being together in retreats for this very reason. I have seen people DO AMAZING work in the company of other people's magic and care. <3

I love this journey and I appreciate this office hour and whatever space your heart allows with retreats, etc., in the future. I am happy to hear community writing/sharing is as nourishing for you as it is for all of us. you are everyone's poetry godmother they never knew they needed :)

Prompt idea I have seen going around in my music circle: Writing a love letter to yourself. Write it as if it is to someone else. No “I love you even when you do this…” or “I love you but you are…” all nice lovely things to yourself about yourself.

I love you even when you don’t want to be loved.

I see my light when I love you but you already know that, so believe it.

Catching up on this creative, supportive, love-filled thread. T H A N K. Y O U to all. I have dance class at this time and we are getting ready for carnaval (fingers crossed) so could not make it. But took notes from your convo and feel the spirit of what you made together today. xx

How does it feel for you when a fan tells you they love one of your songs and how much it means for them ? Is it a nice feeling or feels different?

Hello lovely Amy!

2Qs :)

1) How is your creative spirit during the winter season?

2) when do you know a piece is done, as in ready to share with the world?

Expand full comment
Amy Turn Sharp's avatar

I am not sure of "done" but i know that i need to get things out of me... I will sometimes go back and write more, expand or edit. I try and not keep anything too precious. If it is, the world has not seen it yet. I am writing a collection now that is very personal... it is still inside of my notebook. I don't know much about it yet. <3

wow, yes! I completely understand protecting your heart and the words they keep...too precious is the perfect way to describe those thoughts. I love that line of thinking... tysm <3

Hi hi! I think I was just worrying about my writing yesterday... I said that I have not been writing as much... truth is, I am collecting i think. I am bringing wood in for the fire maybe. I am feeling very happy that the sun will be around more and that keeps me happy with creative thoughts. But sometimes I just go under the covers. It can be hard for us all.

I agree. Trying to remain positive but the darkness gets to me. But good stuff can come out of rest.

Hello lovely Lydia!! It's so wonderful to virtually connect with you. Thank you for this thoughtfulness.

How is your creative spirit doing this season???

To your point, I find that my source of writing comes from pain, and the process is tough to start but once I feel my way through it's easier to go back to it and edit... then it feels like a whole new piece surfaces and what I started is never finished :)

Honestly a little quiet but it’s coming back. I try to keep it nourished with morning pages. Three full pages of free write before I do anything else. I do so much free writing when I’m not super inspired. Eventually it all comes to some use :)

I love that! I read the book Artist's way and it reminds me I need to revisit. Question - outside of morning pages, how do you keep your pieces organized (if at all)? For example, do you have certain journals/writing space for different purposes? I feel like I need to take a day and collect myself - I have post-its, Google docs, Macbook notes, journals, etc. I feel like if one day I can consolidate them maybe I could tether something really beautiful (or messy?!) together.

That sounds wonderful. Was trying out the time space here on weekends... but we may try one later at night too.... I just like the idea of people being able to pop in. I think I can have a newsletter post the day before so people can leave questions in advance is cool idea.

Hoping I can make it to the discussion....here are a few questions: I get really nervous when I share my poems or art, any confidence boosting tips or tricks? Or should I just say fuck it and put it out in the world and have that be that?

When writing, sometimes I get stuck. Any tips on how to get the wheels turning again?! Thank you for creating this awesome little space in the interwebs to come together. xoxo

I think finding someone you trust to show your work to is great... but yes, there is a part of art that takes bravery if you want to put it in the world... practice helps. And with being stuck, sometimes it is ok to be stuck. Do something else for a bit.. or try a prompt or take a walk. Allow yourself to be filled up by the world or someone else....

Expand full comment
Lydia Loveless's avatar

Agreed. Sometimes just putting something out there creates a confidence boost.

Do a ten minute free write or take a walk or dance or read a poem when stuck. Or all of the above lol

Right now reading Meeting the Shadow which is all about integrating your repressed traits into your full self and trying not to repress darker traits but use them to your advantage. Good for times of loss/feeling listless/quarter mid whatever life crisis.

Listening to lots of poppy hits bc I am

Writing. Also tons of John Vanderslice. Deeply poetic and creative and poppy
