I like to create prompts for my workshops that are simple to do AND trick you into writing poems. People moan about not being able to write poems and I laugh. We all can write. Don’t call it a poem. Call it a “piece” and maybe fall in love with it.
Give it away. Trust yourself.
This one is called PoemLists
You make a list. Like, as simple as that. Lists are gorgeous ways to dump out our brains. Lists are soothing. They can be supportive as a way to combat anxiety. They can become PIECES. Writing a list in a way you’ve never thought of before maybe? List poems can be born in a couple ways. Sometimes they are fully formed. You read it and it makes you feel something. Other times you can “mine” your lists and find something you want to explore. You can make a list each day. In that journal you’ve started. :)
Here are some list prompts for you.
Write a list of your favorite smells
List of things you used to be scared of
List of the most dangerous texts you could send right now
List of words you love
List of book titles you could write
List of people you miss
List of things that piss you off
List of how you like to be touched
List of the meanest people you know
List of sexy things you can do
List of everything you know about the male gaze
List of your favorite ways to spend 20 bucks
List of bad words
List of fruits you have never eaten
List of your most beautiful friends
List of how you do not want to die
List of weird things you thought about recently
So sometimes you can just make a list but other times if you get stuck you can use repetition + the list…that is another trick to keep yourself writing. Perhaps you're working on a list of things you used to be scared of and it could go like this:
I used to be scared of dogs but now I'm not.
I used to be scared of you leaving me but now I'm not.
I used to be scared of thunder but now I'm not.
and so on…
old ones of mine:
The real thing is to keep writing. Most creativity is deep within us. It needs to come out. It’s ok that a lot of the first things that come to your mind are not great. You gotta keep writing and let the obvious, dull or tired things go to make way for the new, weird and wonderful.
